Things to know
✓ Counseling is a talk therapy that allows a person to share his/her difficult feelings and problems in a confidential environment. Counseling helps us vent, reflect, learn life skills and build resilience. It can help us build confidence, overcome peer pressure, cope with stress, anxiety, and other emotional issues and improve relationships. Everything conversed between the client and the counselor remains strictly confidential.
✓ The counselor/therapist helps you to outline what you expect from the counseling sessions. Over the course of multiple sessions, the counselor aims to help you meet those goals.
✓ Counseling is not giving advice. The counselor may provide guidance where necessary, but the client is very much an active participant in taking decisions for change in his/her own life.
✓ One session is normally 45 to 50 minutes. Sessions are usually scheduled once a week or as the need may be.
✓ The number of sessions a client will need is a decision made mutually by the client and the therapist.
